Cincinnati Public Library Renovation
University of Cincinnati, DAAP
September - December 2023
Taking a look at the current evolution libraries are going through with more information being communicated virtually, our four-person design group composed a new set of spaces for a full remodel of the ground and first floor of the public library in downtown Cincinnati. As a group, our goal was to bring together the community in a similar fashion that the natural and built elements work as one unit to create the city. We all designed innovative and interactive spaces, however I focused my skills on an innovation station and work lab, both located on the second floor of the building.
Work Lab
The COVID pandemic created a sense of normalcy for completely virtual jobs and has redefined “working from home”, leaving many firms to stay progressing online despite the pandemic coming to an end. In response to this, I designed a workspace for all different types of people who are not going into a physical office. Additionally, my goal was to design an outlet for those to work who may not have access for at home wifi and other necessary amenities for a working atmosphere. In the work lab, users can experience various subspaces that suit their individual preferences and needs to focus. Ranging from secluded individual pods to communal presentation spaces, the work lab helps modernize a typical office-like setting.

Innovation Station
In order to promote movement and wonder, I utilized the first floor bridge for what I call the innovation station. Similar to the work lab, there are tiered flexible elements on the north and south window walls, but rather than working or studying on them, they can be used for play. Users can sit, lay, jump, or manipulate them as they will and above them is a moving suspended stained glass installation. When the sun shines through the windows, the glass catches the light and illuminates, creating an interesting visual experience for users on the wooden tiered elements as they look up. Additionally, there are half-sphere shaped stain glass tunnels for users to go through and inside are fun graphic about the city or new and upcoming events, encouraging people to seek the information and feel a sense of wonder!
